“Just Say No” to Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin will be McCain’s undoing. Period.
On Sunday, The Washington Post quoted McCain campaign manager Rick Davis as saying the FBI conducted a background check of Palin.
But Monday, the FBI told the Atlantic Monthly no such check took place.
This appears to be what we in the business call a “lie.”
“In general, we do not do vetting for political campaigns except as it might regard investigations needed for security clearances,” the magazine’s Web site quoted John Miller, the chief FBI spokesman. If the agency had conducted a security check of Palin, it wouldn’t have shared it with the campaign, the magazine said.
But why is Sarah Palin the key to the undoing of the McCain campaign?
Because the Sarah Palin choice could prove to be the “gateway meme” that leads people to other factual missteps and blatant lies and hypocrisy that McCain calls a campaign.
Pot is considered a “gateway drug” because it supposedly leads people to harder drugs. While I have never met anybody who didn’t try some alcohol – a legal drug – before they took their first toke, I can see their point. I mean, when kids realize that everyone has been lying to them about the effects and problems with pot, I can see how it makes them wonder if all the warnings about acid and coke is also a big steaming pile of fear-tactic crap. The government hysteria about pot is one of those “gateway” lies that causes the rest of the warnings to lose their overall credibility.
In the same way, this happens in politics. Katrina, for example, revealed the impotence and cronyism and incompetence of the Bush Administration to the world. We watched a split screen of the President telling the FEMA director that he was doing a ‘heckuva job,’ while the other side showed a city literally drowning. This kind of imagery allowed us to realize that if the Bush Administration had been lying and incompetent about Katrina – and we know they are, we can see it – maybe they were lying and incompetent about other things, like the economy, or torture, or the war in Iraq…
It only takes a pull on a single string – one high profile glaring bit of bullshit – and the whole sweater can untangle.
So the question is, which of McCain’s obvious bits of bullshit will be the one that blatantly catches the attention of America and reveals the rest of McCain’s lies as the steaming piles of horseshit they are?
