From Think Progress on January 20, 2008:

Last week, CTV revealed that the Canadian government had put the United States on a “torture watch list.” Under heavy pressure from the United States, the Canadian Foreign Minister now has ordered the manual to be rewritten because it “wrongly includes some of our closest allies.”

From Think Progress on January 17, 2008:

The list is part of a “torture awareness workshop” that tells diplomats where to watch for abuse:

The list includes Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, and China. But surprisingly, it also included the United States, Guantanamo Bay, and Israel.

It notes specific “U.S. interrogation techniques,” which include “forced nudity, isolation, and sleep deprivation.” The U.S. has repeatedly denied allegations by international groups that it tortures prisoners captured in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. However, U.S. officials have refused to comment on the Canadian list.

Of course, forced nudity and sleep deprivation doesn’t sound all that bad, it just depends on the circumstances. It is nice to know that in America, we only have the nice kinds of forced nudity and sleep deprivation. It’s not isolation, it’s privacy.

UPDATE: From the BBC:

A government spokesman said the manual did not reflect the views of Canada… “The training manual is not a policy document and does not reflect the views or policies of this government,” said a spokesman for Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier.

The manual lists US interrogation techniques such as forced nudity, isolation, sleep deprivation and the blindfolding of prisoners under “definition of torture”

The official position of the Canadian government is that America only has the nice kinds of blindfolds.
